The song «Driftwood» tells the story of my friend Yonten, who fled from Tibet to Switzerland 7 years ago.
A story about the courage to stand up and speak out against injustice, even if this means that as a consequence you will probably never see your family again and have to somehow cope in a foreign country, a foreign culture and with a language you don't speak.
In Tibet, Yonten was a teacher of Tibetan history. When he was forbidden by the Chinese regime to teach his subject, he resisted and wrote an article saying that Tibetans have a right to know their history. That very night he had to leave the country.
Three years ago he was able to meet his mother in India on a pilgrimage, knowing that it would probably be the last time they would be able to see each other.
Yonten is the same age as me and he also has two children the same age as mine. He now works in a nursing home for the elderly and carries out his job with an incredible amount of passion and love.
Because his story moves me very much, I wrote this song.
I am glad our paths have crossed.

lyrics
Driftwood
Waiting for that train to leave
To meet my Mama one last time
Before we say goodbye
Goodbye for good
Become driftwood
Try to find a home
In this place I don't belong
With shoes too big to wear
Kids who make me stare
At the stars
Stare at the stars
I miss the mountains, the taste of the view
I couldn't keep my mouth shut
I couldn't let them wipe out our past
So I had to leave
Leave for good
Became driftwood
Try to find a home
In this place I don't belong
With shoes too big to wear
Kids who make me stare
At the stars
Stare at the stars
Where did you live there?
Show me where you ran off.
What was is like there?
Show me where you grew up staring at the stars
Stare at the stars
Stare at the stars
I miss the mountains, the taste of the view and you
